What does average speed mean?

In response to a rider’s very legitimate question about what ‘average speed’ actually means, I offer the following definition for comment:

Definition of average speed for Tenax Ride is as follows:

Total time taken from Port Melbourne to Mordialloc / distance will be the average speed ‘heading out’.

Total time taken from Port Melbourne to Mordialloc / distance will be the average speed ‘heading back’.

In the case of the 32 kph group, the ride from Port Melbourne to Mordi should take about 52 minutes.

The rest stop will vary in length.

Then about 52 minutes back.

Because of stops for traffic lights, slowing for hills, etc, the instantaneous speed at any particular may be higher than 32 kph and in fact must be higher in order to achieve that average.

Ride time for the 25 kph group, by comparison, will be around 67 minutes heading out, 67 back. The rest stop should be less than 10 minutes but let’s not stress too much about that eh? Longer rest stops means the groups get to overlap a little more at Mordi, which is nice.
